15 years with Ryanair

Published: 11 June 2012

On Tuesday 12 June, fifteen years have passed since the first Ryanair flight landed at Stockholm Skavsta Airport.

In 1997 the concept “low cost flights” was a brand new phenomenon in Europe, and the first flights departed for London Stansted. The present audience watched the premier flight and they already knew that something big had happened in the Nyköping area.

The low cost flights became great success and more routes were added to Stockholm Skavsta. In 2003 Ryanair established their first Scandinavian base at Stockholm Skavsta with at first three, then four based aircraft. At the most, the airline had six based aircraft at the airport, operating over 50 routes. Today there are five based aircraft and 45 routes operated.

During these fifteen years the enormous development of low cost carriers has severely shaken the airline industry.

Stockholm Skavsta has been involved throughout the whole journey, which has been incredibly exciting. We are hoping for even more development in the future and look forward to continue the journey with Ryanair.

Today Ryanair is the largest low cost carrier in Europe, operating 173 destinations and transporting more than 70 million passengers per year. The airline has 8,500 employees and 290 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Stockholm Skavsta is the Ryanair base in Sweden, but the airline also operates Göteborg City Airport, Karlstad Airport, Malmö Airport, Skellefteå Airport, Stockholm Västerås and Växjö Småland Airport.

-----------------------------------------------------
Sweden's third largest airport Stockholm Skavsta today has 52 routes, of which 45 are Ryanair destinations. The passenger volume in 2011 was almost 2.6 million travellers. Among the airlines operating from the airport are, besides Ryanair, the Polish low-cost carrier Wizz Air and Gotlandsflyg, as well as the tour operator Fritidsresor (TUI).

The airport is owned to 90,1% by the British company TBI since 1998, which is a part of the Spanish Infrastructure Group ACDL (abertis). The Municipality of Nyköping is shareholder of 9,9% of the airport.
